About the Indiana Resource Center for
Families With Special Needs
The Indiana Resource Center for Families with Special Needs (IN*SOURCE) is grateful for the opportunity to serve Hoosier children and youth with disabilities and their families. We are most pleased, however, that today all children and youth with disabilities are entitled to a public education. In this, our third decade of service, we confirm our ongoing commitment of service and support to individuals with disabilities and their families.
A Parent Organization...Thirty-four years ago, a group of parents in South Bend came together primarily because they wanted to understand what “going to school” would mean for their children with disabilities. Prior to 1975, most of those families had children who, because of their disabilities, were not permitted to attend their public schools. The group of parents worked with their local schools to first understand the requirements of a new public law that said that their children, as all other children, are entitled to a free appropriate public education, and then to share that information with other families in the South Bend community.
The mission of IN*SOURCE is to provide parents, families and service providers in Indiana the information and training necessary to assure effective educational programs and appropriate services for children and young adults with disabilities.
Parents helping Parents... IN*SOURCE today employs nearly 13 staff at our central office in South Bend and 16 staff in other regional sites around the state. Virtually all staff are parents of children with disabilities or are persons with disabilities. The Board of Directors is composed of a majority of parents of children with disabilities or persons with disabilities. IN*SOURCE trains parents of children with disabilities to serve as volunteer parent trainers and resources in their local communities throughout Indiana. With parents helping parents, all that IN*SOURCE does directly relates to the provision of information, training, individual assistance and support primarily to parents of children and young adults with disabilities.
During the past 12 months, IN*SOURCE has provided individual assistance to 16,278 Hoosier parents and conducted 279 workshop and training events for 8,002 Hoosier parents and professionals.
“As a public school administrator, I appreciate the fact that IN*SOURCE is a strong advocate for families. However, my greatest compliment on their behalf is that they work hard to help families and schools learn to work together,...not against each other.” |
